Sea Surface Temperature Charts to Find More Fish

Pelagic species including Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish, Wahoo, and Mahi, can be found in various ranges of water temperatures, gravitating to temperature breaks where bodies of cooler water meet warmer water which creates conditions of upwelling to start the marine food chain. Studying Sea Surface Temperatures (SST) near New South Wales before heading offshore gives any serious angler the deciding upper hand.

FishTrack’s Cloudfree SST imagery - produced using data from collective satellite SST sources and aided by computer modeling to fill in areas blocked by cloud cover - offers the ultimate tool to help offshore anglers pinpoint and precisely locate desirable temperature breaks offshore. Concentrations of bait and gamefish will often occur where temperature and chlorophyll breaks are found in proximity to submarine contour changes around ledges, banks, canyons and seamounts.

With FishTrack’s ability to overlay corresponding altimetry (sea surface height anomalies), bathymetry, ocean current imagery, and local hot spots on top of any SST or Chlorophyll layer, successfully targeting fish offshore has never been easier.

New South Wales Offshore Fishing Hot Spots

Look no further for trophy black and blue marlin than New South Wales on Australia’s Eastern coast. Once you get past the Great Barrier Reef the topography slopes down into falling edges gradually working down into 1500 to 4500 to 12000 feet in depths. Marlin patrol the edges as they follow conditions of upwelling and bait school presence. Hot spots off NSW include Heaton's Hill, Jervis Bay Canyon, Hat Head Canyon, Sea Rocks Wide, Cape Hawk Canyon, and Sawtell Canyon.

New South Wales Ideal Fishing Seasons

Locations of various fish species are affected by water temperatures, time of year and availability of food. Sea surface temperature (SST) plays on integral role for targeting species in their respective seasons. For North New Zealand these are the best months to target these species:

  • Blue Marlin – November to May
  • Black Marlin – November to May
  • Striped Marlin – November to May
  • Yellowfin Tuna – June to October
  • Bluefin tuna – June to September
  • Mahi – September to April
"FishTrack SST and Marine Forecast are the first two things I look at in the morning. Cloudfree satellite water temperature and an accurate reading of the winds and current decide how I'll spend my day."
